IRC Software

The following is a detailed "HOW TO" on installing Chat Software:

For those of you on a PC:

1. Download a copy of mIRC (Windows 95, 98, Win2K & NT Program) from MIRC

2. Install the program by running the .exe file you downloaded. This will install your files into the default directory of c:\mirc\ . This will also add a folder to your start button, if you choose to.

3. Click START, PROGRAMS, mIRC, MIRC32.EXE (red yellow and blue icon)

4. You will need to fill in the following information...

For IRC Servers Tab

Server - From the top of the list which appears click on random us dalnet server.

Full Name - This is how someone will see you if they inquire, best not to use your real name.

Email Address - You can place anything here as long as it has a valid email format, once again you don't have to use your private email address if you do not want to, you could use hey@you.com instead.

Nickname - This is how everyone will see you, choose the nickname that you want to be identified as. Be aware that common names are often in use(if not owned) by someone else. You may not get to use what your first few choices may be. Note, you can not use spaces in your nickname, but you can use the _ character or an - instead. Alternative - If the nickname above is taken then this nickname will be used.

Invisible Mode - Be sure to check this box.

Local Info Tab

Local Host - Blank this field out.

IP Address - Blank this field out as well.

On Connect Always Get - Check the IP Address box

Options Tab

Check the Reconnect on disconnection box

Check the On connection failure - Retry box and 20 times at 5 seconds

IdentD Tab

User Id - This is how your mirc software identifies itself to the server, you can use any name here as long as it is not too long, This really does not matter as long as something is here.

Check the Enable only on connection box

And those of you on a MAC:

Getting it

1) Download the IRC program

a) ircle - http://www.ircle.com

b) Snak - http://www.snak.com

c) MacIRC - http://www.macirc.com

d) Stuffit Expander - (if you don't already have it, you'll need it so you can decompress the files; it's in the cmp directory on HyperArchive)

e) Manuals - Some of the Mac-based IRC clients have documentation available other than the instructions included; information about finding those documents should be included in the instructions.

2) Installation

a) Unstuff - either drag the *.sit (or *.sit.hqx) file onto the Stuffit icon to automatically decompress it, or you can double-click on the icon *.sit to launch Stuffit, or you can launch Stuffit and open the from inside the application. If the file is still in BinHex (.hqx) format, you need to decode it from inside Stuffit. (It's a good idea to keep a copy of the *.sit file, just in case)

Setup

1) Double-click on the application icon to launch

2) Follow the instructions for your particular IRC clien

Ircle:

1) Click on the "Cancel" button on the registration dialog box (pay later)

2) Close unnecessary windows (DCC Status and Faces); the only ones you need for now are the "Main" and "Userlist" in the "Windows" menu

3) Select "Preferences..." from the "File" menu

a) Startup...

1) Server: Find a server at http://undernet.org/

2) Port: Defaults to 6667

3) Nickname: enter the name you want to be known by on the channel

4) Username: enter your user (account) name

5) Real Name: Supposedly your real name; doesn't have to be, though...

6) Startup commands: you don't need to do anything here; you can enter something like /join #shamanscave if you want to auto- join the channel

7) Mode: the only one you'll need is "Invisible (+i)"

b) Colors...: The defaults should work fine

c) Sounds...: Again, the defaults are just peachy

d) DCC...: Use the defaults.

e) CTCP...: You might want to check "DCC Flood protection", and if you want to be able to hear sounds from other users, check "Enable CTCP SOUND", and specify a folder that sounds will be stored in; in the "FINGER" reply (E-mail address):", you can enter your e-mail address, and for "USERINFO reply:", think of something clever

f) Text...: Defaults

g) Faces...: Don't worry about them; nobody, and I mean NOBODY, uses them

h) Friends...: You've GOT friends? ;-) (Actually, you don't need to worry about this one)

i) Misc...: You might want to check "Auto connect", "Auto reconnect", and "Auto rejoin"; don't worry about the rest

4) Select "Open Connection" (or Command-K) from the "File" menu

5) When you're connected, enter /join #shamanscave in the "Input Line" window (unless you entered it in the startup commands)

6) You're in da house, and you da bomb!
